There are people who seem to be born with an unquestioning belief that the world wants to hear what they have to say.
I’m not one of them. For me, it’s quite the opposite.
I’ve been writing for a long time, making up stories for even longer, and carrying around thoughts, ideas and fantasies that I’ve wanted to share with others. At the same time, there has always been a stubborn little voice asking why anyone would be interested in the first place.
So I hesitated.
For decades.
The strange thing is that writing itself has never been the problem. That’s where I’m free. Give me a blank page and I can send people hundreds of years into the past, put monsters in lakes, let children solve problems that adults can’t understand, and create worlds where almost anything can happen.
It’s when the stories have to leave my desk that things get difficult.
A fear of succeeding and a fear of failing.
For many years, the easiest solution was simply to keep writing without making too much noise about it.
But now we’re here, and I’m not suddenly going to become someone else. I’ll never feel particularly comfortable in the spotlight, and I have no desire to make my private life public. But I am ready to open the door to the part of my life where the stories, the imagination and the creating happen.
That’s what this blog will be about.
I’ll write about books I’m working on and things I’ve already written. About ideas that work and others that perhaps should have stayed inside my head. About language, imagination, reading and storytelling. And probably about completely different things whenever the mood takes me.
The internet hardly needs another person standing on a box and shouting to be heard. I’d much rather create a little corner where you can sit down for a while, read something in peace, and perhaps leave a thought behind before moving on.
After many years of hesitation, I’m finally going to open the door and see what’s on the other side.
Welcome in.
